Best Workouts In Manhattan

With hundreds of gyms and workout classes, the NYC fitness world can be hard to navigate. These past few months I have been exploring new classes and types of workouts to find the best that Manhattan has to offer. From barre to spin to HIIT, most of the classes can be tailored to and loved by all fitness levels.

Here are my favorites:

Swerve Fitness

Swerve Fitness takes your average spin class to the next level with races and team challenges. The classes are broken down into three teams that compete together for the highest scores. Scores are earned based on the amount of effort you are exerting (speed and resistance are both factors) or swerving to the beat (your team riding together at a goal speed for short intervals). This class is great if you love competition but don't worry you will never be called out for your personal score.

Locations: Midtown, Flatiron & UES (coming soon)

Deals: Right now they are offering buy one, get one free for new riders. That's 2 rides for only $34. Click here to check out this deal.

Switch Playground

Switch Playground is an "unexplained, only experienced" high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout. During the class you will complete 20, 2 minute challenges lead by a team of highly knowledgeable trainers. You work in groups of two so this is a great class to bring a friend to. Switch is one of the busiest gyms in the city right now and also has the highest energy level in a class that I have ever experienced. This is a great class if you need a little extra motivation or get bored easily during workouts. The class is highly intense but is easily modified because there are so many trainers.

The 12th St location also has an underground personal training studio if you're looking for an even more intense workout. Josh, AKA Beast, is my favorite trainer that I have ever worked with.

Locations: SOHO & 12th St

Hit House

Hit House is a Muay Thai kickboxing studio that offers group and private kickboxing classes. The classes are not "kickboxing inspired"-- they consist of real Muay Thai moves. This is a full body workout of cardio, muscle toning and fighting skills that requires no previous kickboxing experience. At the beginning of class your instructor will go over the different punches, elbows and kicks and then throughout the class will give you sequences to complete at your own speed. The classes are small enough that your instructor can go around and help with any moves you may be struggling with.

Locations: SOHO

Deals: Your first class is only $20. Now through Sunday, all additional classes (for both new and existing clients) are only $20 as well! Click here to check out these deals.

Refine Method

Refine Method is a HIIT workout founded by a former professional dancer for the New York City Ballet, Brynn Putnam. After teaching for many different gyms and finding that her clients were not getting the results they wanted, she reevaluated what she thought she knew about fitness, weeded out fitness myths and 'refined' her new smart workout. Refine Method classes are the closest thing to personal training I have experienced in a group setting and at a group class price. The classes are kept small so that the instructor can still work with each member. This is a great class if you like privacy in your workout or get intimidated by large, busy gyms.

Locations: UES, UWS & West Village

Deals: First class is buy one, get one free-- or two classes for only $34. Click here to check out this deal.

Xtend Barre

Xtend Barre is a low-impact, barre inspired workout. During the class the instructor will lead you through ballet moves using the bar, bands and balls. This class is great if you're looking to tone up without putting stress on your joints. The energy in the class is more relaxed compared to the higher intensity classes I have listed and also less intimidating for first timers.

Location: Tribeca

Deals: First timers can get an unlimited week of classes for $35. Click here to check out this deal.

CBXT

CBXT or Complete Body Xross Training is a medium size HIIT class with between 10-20 participants. This class is great for weight loss as they have heart rate monitors available to track your progress throughout the class. During the class you will do a combination of HIIT movements and cardio and you will end the class with a yoga stretch and meditation/relaxation.

Locations: Financial District & UES
